Preparing Your CV
Once you have decided to look for a new challenge, preparing your CV is probably the task you would like to leave until last. However, it is a high-quality CV that will have the greatest impact on securing the job you really want.
So, here are some points to consider when writing your CV:
- Always use the same plain font type e.g Arial
- Always format in the same way
- Use concise and unambiguous sentences
- Avoid exaggeration and a 'flowery' writing style
- Do not make false employment claims - you will be found out!
- Use bullet points to highlight relevant skills and experience, do not use long paragraphs
- Always put your achievements before your duties and explain how you accomplished them
- If you are a manager, say how many people you manage
- Briefly describe the company you work for and the job title of the person you report to e.g. "...reporting to the Financial Controller"
- Explain briefly the reason(s) for leaving e.g. redundancy
- Only include relevant information
- If you are looking to change career, highlight your transferable skills
- State your highest level of education first and include your grades
- State your work history in reverse chronology i.e. most recent job first
- Ensure all dates are accurate
- Explain any long career gaps e.g travelling, maternity leave
- Always use the correct tense when describing your duties
- Last but not least, always proofread your CV before sending.
